Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A resident in Shellharbour encountered a pressing and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to cascade into the garden and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome influx caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and resulted in mould growth within the home, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

What Methods Can You Use to Determine the Source of Water Ingress?

The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water travelling downhill from the rear and side gardens of neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this excess water, it was forced to flow beneath the house.

Developing an Effective Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing crafted and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically designed to collect and redirect water before it could reach the foundation of the home.

The project encompassed several crucial elements:

  • A French drain system meticulously engineered to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically drilled holes to facilitate efficient water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, employing concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled using an excavator to create a sturdy barrier to hold back the adjacent garden.
  • Efficient on-site soil removal, aided by a dumper for streamlined site management.

How Can You Manage Water Effectively?

The newly established drainage system now successfully captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a robust, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
